Sen Kevin Cramer (R-ND) spits on the graves of dead Uvalde schoolchildren

Sen Kevin Cramer (R-ND) is not as well-known as such media whores as Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, and the House’s barking cabal of ‘look-at-me’ morons. But when it comes to callous indifference to his fellow humans, he is as towering in his lack of empathy as the most flint-hearted of his fellow politicos. A character deficiency made manifest by his rejection of the Senate’s almost meaningless bipartisan agreement on gun safety.

The primary ‘achievement’ of this legislation — should it be enacted, and of that, there is no guarantee — is that 31 states who do not have ‘red flag’laws will be encouraged to do so. And all states will receive funds either to institute the program or beef it up. Red-flag laws allow police, family members, or even doctors to petition a court to take away someone’s firearms for up to a year if they feel that person is a threat to themselves or others. The laws are not arbitrary. A judge has to weigh the evidence before taking someone’s guns away.

The law in most states bars felons, those committed to a mental institution, or the recipients of a domestic violence protection order from owning guns. This is all well and good, but it is reactive. A red flag law is proactive. It aims to identify potentially violent people and disarm them before they kill themselves or someone else. It is a solidly pro-life measure.

But to North Dakota’s Junior Senator, this life-saving measure is worthy of derision and should be dismissed as nonsense compared to the righteous mission of power accumulation. Or, as he told reporters

“I think we’re more interested in the red wave than we are in red flags, quite honestly.”

For once, when someone says they are being honest, they are being honest — draw-droppingly honest.

I do not doubt that many Republican politicians feel as Cramer does. But has the right-wing political ecosystem become so cynical that a Senator can say something as heartless as this without receiving any push back? Will any of these other pro-death gun zealots join Cramer in his inhumanity?

The measure, as slim as it is — it does not increase the age to buy war weapons, expand background checks, or ban ARs — does aim at identifying and disarming potential mass murderers. Cramer waves that away as inconsequential. He spits on the graves of the massacred Uvalde schoolchildren.

Cramer has four children and five grandkids. Does he not want them to be as safe as possible? He lost another child — his son Isaac — to complications from alcoholism. Not even this personal tragedy gave him the empathy to understand another parent’s agony at the death of their child.

Cramer is a fundamentalist Christian. And he uses his perverted faith as a club to beat other people. In 2013, he blamed legalized abortion (N.B.  Roe was decided in 1973) and a decline in religious values for a recent increase in mass shootings, saying,

“We have normalized perversion and perverted God’s natural law”

And you will not be surprised to know that he is anti-LGBTQ+. He also justified his desire to slash SNAP (food stamps) by billions by quoting the Bible

“If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” Thessalonians 3:10

To Jesus, poverty was a burden. To evangelical cynics, it is a sin. Why is it that these Bible-thumpers assume the worst in people? It has to be, as psychologists call it, “projection”. These cruel, mean, immoral bastards assume that as they are second-rate people, everyone else must be.

It is people like Cramer who drag America down. Unfortunately, there are many like him. And many others who vote for them. He may well get his red wave. And for sure, school massacres will continue unabated.
